One of Malaga’s most awaited projects, the breathtaking Caminito del Rey (King’s Walkway) that spans the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. is shortly due to open in time for Semana Santa (Easter).
Due to be hugely popular, and mentioned in the Lonely Planet’s top-ten new places to visit for 2015, visitors will have to sign up online in advance through a website to be announced shortly
For the first few months, whilst the walkway is under the stewardship of the provincial council, entrance will be free and the walkway will be open Tuesday to Sunday. Afterwards there will be a charge and visitor numbers limited.
The 110-year old pathway clinging to the rocks above the El Chorro gorge, has been restored thanks to the unique collaboration of all the local town halls as well as the Junta de Andalucía and at an estimated cost of 2 million euros.
The new path follows the old route reasonably faithfully and includes wooden panels with thankfully hand rails as well as a skywalk section.
Here at Marbella Escapes we can’t wait to try it out, having regretted never doing the old more dangerous route! Sure to become a firm favourite of our Antequera, El Chorro, El Torcal tour.
