Antequera Tour

The Heart of Andalucía

Antequera, known as the heart of Andalucía due to its geographic position amongst the most important Andalucían cities; Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville, is one of the most historically rich cities in Andalucia.

Antequera was named the “Ancient Place” by the Romans and it’s to the heart of its historic centre that our tour stop takes us, to the “Conjunto Histórico de Antequera”, an area which is the result of nearly 3000 years of uninterrupted habitation and offers us a glimpse into the history of the entire city.

Enjoy panoramic views over the city, with its skyline dotted with the towers of dozens of churches and convents and of course the ever present “Peña de los Enamorados” or Lovers Rock dominating the view. Our tour takes us to the 14th century Alcazaba, the national monument that is the renaissance church of the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, the Arco de Los Gigantes with its accompanying Latin statues and tombstones found in surrounding Roman towns and the partially excavated Roman baths.

Antequera Dolmens Site

UNESCO World Heritage Megalithic Monuments

The Dolmens of Antequera thanks to their recent inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List, will hopefully become a name as common as that of much more famous megalithic monuments such as Stonehenge.

Just outside Antequera, the Dolmens – Menga, Viera and the Tholos de El Romeral – are the first stop on our Antequera tour and take us 5000 years back into the history of this ancient place.

Built during the Neolithic and Bronze Age out of large stone blocks, these ancient monuments form chambers with lintelled roofs or false cupolas. These three tombs, buried beneath their original earth tumuli, are one of the most remarkable architectural works of European prehistory and one of the most important examples of European Megalithism.

El Torcal Visit

Surreal and Beautiful Karst Landscape

El Torcal de Antequera and the surreal, eerie and unique limestone rock formations it’s karst landscape provides, is one of the most beautiful natural parks in Andalucia, one of the most beautiful karst landscapes in the world and undoubtedly one of our favourite trips at Marbella Escapes!

We walk an easy 2.5km route, which enables us to see some of the most impressive formations and provides stunning views over the surrounding landscape as well as a slight detour to see some stunning examples of the ammonite fossils the park is famous for.

Our excursion to El Torcal is a perfect ending to our tour and will provide you with unforgettable memories (and hundreds of photos) of a perfect Marbella Escape day trip.

Tour Options

Antequera – The City, the Dolmens and El Torcal

Our Antequera day trip, as with all Marbella Escapes tours and excursions is a private tour, meaning you get a truly unique and intimate experience. Pick up & drop off are door to door, from anywhere on the Costa del Sol – Malaga, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona as well as shore excursions from cruise ships docking at Malaga port. Your tour guide will meet you in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to Antequera.

Entrance to the monuments that we visit are included in the tour price. Lunch is not included in the tour price, however during the tour, we can either stop for lunch at an established local tapas bar just inside the ancient city walls where you can enjoy some authentic local dishes at local prices in a pleasant plaza or we can eat a meal at the visitors centre at El Torcal before our walk.

Please note, as in most towns and cities in the area, the streets of Antequera can be very steep and cobbled and as we visit El Torcal Park (although the walk is relatively simple) please wear decent walking shoes or trainers, sandals and flip flops are not ideal and the itinerary as a whole is not best suited to people with mobility problems. We can of course adjust the tour accordingly so please mention in the comments section when booking any issues we should be aware of.

The Dolmens, the historic centre of Antequera and El Torcal are a true Marbella Escape, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol. Contact Marbella Escapes today to come and experience these unique places for yourself.
