Caminito del Rey

The History

Caminito del Rey

The legendary Caminito del Rey is a narrow walkway, clinging to the cliff face of the Gaitanes Gorge, 100 dizzying metres above the Guadalhorce River.

The path was originally built between 1901 and 1905 to allow workers at the power plants at El Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls to cross between them, transport materials and allow inspections.

It was during the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce dam by King Alfonso XIII in 1921 that the King walked along the path and thus give it its name the “Caminito del Rey” or Kings Little Walkway.

The Restoration

Caminito del Rey

The concrete path, resting on steel rails gradually deteriorated over time and eventually after fatal accidents in 1999 and 2000 the path was closed to the public.

In March 2014 the cornerstone was laid for the new pathway, which has been constructed to follow closely the route and features of the old pathway, with some modern additions included such as glass bottom sections on the wooden walkway, providing stunning and vertigo inducing views!
