Ronda & and the Caves

Cueva de La Pileta, Cueva del Gato & Ronda

Cueva de La Pileta and Cueva del Gato

Cueva de La Pileta – The Cave of the Pool

Cueva de la Pileta and Cueva del Gato – two of the most well-known but most well hidden spots in the whole Serranía de Ronda.

Without a doubt two of the most interesting, most beautiful and as with all Marbella Escapes tour stops, two of the most unique destinations in the area.

Our first stop in the tour is to the Cueva de La Pileta. Discovered in 1905 by a nearby farm searching for guano to use as fertiliser, the extensive paintings range from 5000 to over 20,000 years old.

The lack of commercialism and the closeness of the tour to the paintings and galleries make an excursion to the Cueva de La Pileta one of the highlights of the Ronda area.

The guided tour, which lasts around an hour expertly explains many of the most impressive and ancient the paintings as well as the beautiful rock formations. The darkness of the cave and the proximity to our ancestors creates a unique experience and emerging from the cave into the warm Andalucían sun you’ll be left with an incredible impression of a special place.

Cueva del Gato – The Cat´s Cave

Our second stop after the Cueva de La Pileta is the beautiful Cueva del Gato, hidden alongside the Rio Guadiaro, just a short drive outside of Benaoján, it is one of the true natural beauty spots of the Serranía de Ronda and personally at Marbella Escapes, our favourite stop!

Its crystal clear yet turquoise blue waters, its waterfall framed by the cavernous entrance to the looming cave and its beautiful natural setting make it a perfect spot for a cooling swim after the short, 2 km walk from the nearby town of Estación de Benaoján.

A tour to Ronda is the classic excursion from Marbella and the Costa del Sol, after visiting the caves, we discover the historic heart of Ronda with a shorter tour than our Ronda and Setenil de Las Bodegas Day Trip.

Ronda is an enchanting and historic city, situated high on cliffs either side of the El Tajo gorge with its two sides connected by its famous bridge, El Puente Nuevo.

  • Sunset over Ronda and the Serrania

Ronda’s rare combination of natural beauty, the sierras & mountains, its labyrinth streets, its palaces and faded mansions, churches and convents makes even a short stop in Ronda the end to an unforgettable tour.
