Mijas Pueblo, Stupa Benalmadena and the Butterfly House

The Enlightenment Stupa in Benalmádena

Our first stop on the tour, towering over the coastline below is The Enlightenment Stupa in Benalmádena, 33m high and the largest Stupa in Europe.

A Buddhist monument for peace, prosperity, harmony of the world and an ideal place to learn, reflect & meditate.

The upstairs is a marvel in Buddhist architecture and creativity and the large square walls of the meditation room are colourfully decorated with the life story of the Buddha. The Stupa also has a wonderful exhibition hall downstairs, covering the treasures and traditions of the Himalayas and Buddhist culture.

Butterfly House

Our second stop and located right next door the Stupa is the wonderful, “Mariposario de Benalmádena” or “The Butterfly Park”. The park was deliberately designed in a Thai architectural style, including materials especially imported from Chiang Mai, in order to blend in with the Buddhist Temple.

After the peace and the tranquility of the Stupa, the experience of more than 1,500 butterflies flying free around you in a tropical environment is quite some change.

Many of the species reproduce in the park itself, so visitors get the opportunity to observe the different biological cycles and transformations the butterflies go through. Everyday new butterflies are born in the nursery and give visitors the rare opportunity of seeing how they hatch from the chrysalis, open their wings and take their first flight.

Mijas Pueblo, Stupa Benalmadena and the Butterfly House

Mijas Pueblo

Mijas ‘pueblo’ is one of the most famous traditional “white” villages in Spain. Only 30 minutes from Malaga airport, though it confidently combines a mix of a typical white village feel alongside touches of modern sensibilities, such as with opening of the New CAC Mijas Art Museum.

Our final stop on the tour, where we leave you time to shop and explore Mijas – “A Village to Experience”. A walk along the fortress walls and its beautiful gardens, which have been designed to have flowers all year round, offers some of the most spectacular views of the coast and are a wonderfully peaceful end to a tour that includes the Buddhist Stupa and the Butterfly Museum.

Mijas is also home to the famous donkey taxis, with over 60 operating at the moment and one of the main attractions in Mijas. Another unique attraction to visit in Mijas is the Miniature Museum or “Carramoto de Mijas”, opened in 1972 by Juan Elegido Millán to exhibit his collection of miniature art from around the world and containing over 360 pieces, ranging from shrunken heads to a portrait of Abraham Lincoln on a pinhead.

Mijas pretty streets are a shopper’s paradise with a wide collection of shops, ranging from Mayan Monkey (the world’s smallest chocolate factory!), plenty of handmade ceramics, and other arts and crafts such as jewellery and an abundance of leather shops.

Please note, as in most towns and cities in the area, the streets of Mijas can be steep and cobbled, please wear decent walking shoes or trainers, sandals and flip flops are not ideal and the itinerary as a whole is not best suited to people with mobility problems. We can of course adjust the tour accordingly so please mention in the comments section when booking any issues we should be aware of.

This is a fun and more Costa centred tour but still a beautiful and great Marbella Escape, showing a different side of the Costa del Sols lesser known attractions and monuments. Contact Marbella Escapes today to come and experience these great sights for yourself.
