The Serrania de Ronda

Ronda, rising majestically up from the landscape and ringed by the surrounding Sierras is the jewel of the Serranía de Ronda and the highlight of our guided tour of the Ronda area.

Ronda’s narrow winding streets and ancient walls, perched high on the cliffs either side of the El Tajo gorge and connected by its famous bridge, El Puente Nuevo is a city that has enchanted visitors for centuries.

Ronda’s unique combination of natural beauty, the gorges & mountains, its winding streets, its palaces and faded mansions, churches and convents will provide you with great photos, lovely memories and an urge to return.

The Serrania de Ronda

Setenil de Las Bodegas

Setenil de Las Bodegas, the first stop on our tour, is one of the most special of Andalucía’s myriad Pueblo Blancos. A fascinating and unforgettable small town to visit, located just 15km from Ronda but without the tourists! Setenil de Las Bodegas gives you a real glimpse into rural Andalucia. This small town of approx. 3000 inhabitants follows the meanderings of it’s river with its narrow and winding streets tumbling down the sides of the gorge.

Setenil’s most famous feature is its streets and cave houses set directly into the overhang in the cliffs carved by the river that give it it’s nickname “The Town Under a Rock”. Originally used for storage, many of these caves have a simple front and inside the comfortable “cave houses” the bare rock is often exposed.

The Serrania de Ronda

Cueva de La Pileta

After the streets of Ronda and Setenil, a short drive through the beautiful countryside sees us arrive at the Cueva de La Pileta. Famed in the Serrania de Ronda, Pileta is home to an extensive range of neolithic and Paleolithic cave paintings, dating from 5000 to over 30,000 years old.

The proximity on the guided tour to the paintings and galleries, the informative guide and stunning location make an excursion to the Cueva de La Pileta one of the highlights of the Serrania de Ronda.

The guided tour, which lasts around an hour expertly explains many of the most impressive and ancient the paintings as well as the beautiful rock formations. The heavy darkness of the cave and closeness to our ancestors creates a special experience and upon emerging from the cave into the bright Andalucían sun you’ll be left with an incredible impression of another one of the Serrania de Ronda’s hidden charms.
